Finitude as the fourth postulate
Heidegger made finitude and temporality ontologically fundamental: to be Dasein is to be toward death, and the once-only character of each moment is what gives existence its weight. The framework takes exactly this and names it Postulate Four, Finitude, so that the irreversibility of every unfolding is not a passing mood but a structural fact about any agent within Tao. Where Heidegger described finitude through analysis of how we find ourselves, the framework writes it as a load-bearing axiom from which later results follow. The boundary it sets is the same boundary on which grief, urgency, and care become intelligible.
From mood to axiom and ethics
The framework's departure is one of register, not of content. Heidegger left irreversibility as an attunement, a mood that discloses being but never hardens into a rule. The framework instead builds that irreversibility into a formal postulate and lets an ethics descend from it, so that the once-only moment carries obligations rather than only revelations. Finitude stops being something we merely undergo and becomes something we are answerable to.
Why irreversibility grounds grief
If nothing were lost for good, grief would be a confusion to be reasoned away. Postulate Four denies that escape: because each unfolding never returns, loss is real, and grief is the lucid registration of a real loss rather than a failure of composure. This matters for living lucidly because it refuses both denial and despair: the finitude that makes a moment mournable is the same finitude that makes it worth attending to now. To see one's time as non-renewable is to be moved to spend it well.
