Selection as a pattern-generating mechanism
Darwin's discovery was that order can arise without a designer: whatever persists and reproduces better comes to predominate, and structure accumulates from blind variation under constraint. The framework inherits exactly this, treating selection as a mode of Pattern (D3), the intelligible aspect of Tao's unfolding (D2). What Darwin showed for living forms becomes, here, one well-understood way that Pattern crystallizes out of possibility, a mechanism that needs no foresight to produce intelligible form.
One mode of Pattern, not a master key
The framework declines to make selection a universal solvent. Rather than letting the Darwinian schema explain everything from morality to markets to mind, it is generalized into just one mode of Pattern among others operating across complex systems. This restraint matters: selection illuminates the genealogy of intelligible structure, yet it remains a tool within the Pattern aspect (D3) and never reaches across to Mystery (D4), which no selective story can exhaust. Treating it as a master key would betray the very asymmetry on which the framework turns.
Why blind order still leaves room for lucidity
If selection can manufacture intelligible structure without intent, it tempts us to conclude that everything, including our own striving for clarity, is merely its product. Living lucidly means holding the explanatory power of selection without surrendering to it: we can grant that much of Pattern (D3) arose blindly while still recognizing that first-person experience (D9) and awareness of both aspects of Tao (D5) are not themselves reducible to a fitness calculus. In an age that increasingly optimizes human attention the way evolution optimizes traits, naming selection as one mode rather than the whole story protects the space in which an agent can still choose lucidity.
